LISA’S REPLY: Today’s quote spoke to me, as it is also the 4th of July. Across America, we celebrate with our families and friends, having barbecues and watching fireworks.

Our founders broke through the ceiling, laying the foundation for the freedoms that we enjoy today. There are so many invisible systems in place that pulse underneath the surface of our society. From the luxury of having well-lit sidewalks outside our homes to the endless freeways that Los Angeles is so notorious for, everything was laid in place by the many who came before us.
Once these systems work well, they become invisible, taken for granted. When we look out on a sidewalk we don’t think twice about it anymore, forget to pause and be grateful for the “simple things” that came about through complicated efforts. This is what Huxley means when he says “upon which one walks as a matter of course and prescriptive right.”
So today I will immerse myself in the joy of being surrounded by my friends and beautiful family, free to spend time together, laugh together, and gasp at the fireworks together. I wish you all a very happy, grateful Fourth of July!
